Third NAP Expo to address challenges faced by developing countries tackling mid-and long-term adaptation planning

Challenges, gaps and needs faced by developing countries in the midst of crafting their National Adaptation Plans will take the stage at this year’s NAP Expo, which begins tomorrow in Bonn.

This year’s event, entitled NAP Expo 2015: Realizing the NAP process, is structured to encourage sharing, interaction and exchange of information on challenges and best practices that are emerging from the formulation and implementation of the NAP process under the UNFCCC.

The two-day event, which currently has 158 participants registered, also offers a platform for countries and providers of technical and financial support to interact.

The NAP Expo brings together Least Developed Country Parties and other Parties, United Nations organizations and specialized agencies, other international organizations, bilateral and multilateral agencies, regional centres and networks, and individual adaptation practitioners and experts, to discuss issues around selected themes on the process to formulate and implement NAPs.

The theme for this year is Realizing the NAP process, to highlight experiences, lessons learned and gaps, and the progress being made in many developing countries in undertaking the NAP process.

The current Chairs of the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) and the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) of the UNFCCC will be present at this year’s event.

Format of this year’s event

NAP Expo 2015 will be organized with the opportunity for focused interaction in mind: with a limited number of plenary sessions and more time devoted to parallel sessions to stimulate discussions and maximize exchange of information and sharing of experiences.

These parallel sessions will be facilitated by different organisations, may include discussions on various NAP themes and topics, and may be conducted in different interactive formats, such as— but not limited to— short clinics, panel discussion or training sessions. A synthesis of the discussion will be presented in the plenary the following day.

The mandate and a brief history

In December 2012, the Subsidiary Body for Implementation (SBI) of the UNFCCC, at its 37th session, requested the Least Developed Countries Expert Group (LEG) to organize (with the support of the secretariat and in collaboration with relevant organizations) a NAP event for Least Developed Countries in conjunction with its 38th session.

This first event, entitled NAP Expo: Launching of the NAP process in LDCs, was held on 9 June 2013, and was well received by all stakeholders. The organization of the NAP Expo is part of the rolling work programme of the LEG, one of several activities through which it provides technical guidance and support to the NAP process.

NAP Expo 2014 was held on 8 and 9 August 2014, in Bonn, Germany.
