Dr. Fergus Sinclair

Dr. Fergus Sinclair is the Chief Scientist at CIFOR-ICRAF (Center for International Forest Research – World Agroforestry) through a collaborative arrangement with Bangor University in the UK. He is also Honorary Professor at CATIE (Central American Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) in Costa Rica and Honorary Editor of the journal Agroforestry Systems. He is co-convenor of the Transformative Partnership Platform on Agroecology and one the Coordinators of the Coalition for the transformation of food systems through agroecology that emerged from the United Nations Food Systems Summit in 2021. He was leader of the Livelihood Systems Flagship of the CGIAR research program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry (FTA) from 2011-2021 and Project Team Leader for the Committee on World Food Security (CFS), High Level Panel of Experts (HLPE) report on agroecological and other innovative approaches to food security and nutrition published in 2019.

His transdisciplinary research focusses on the measurement and modelling of complex social-ecological systems and he pioneered the use of knowledge-based systems methods to combine local and global scientific knowledge and an options by context (OxC) paradigm to support local innovation in agricultural and food systems at scale.
