Mr. George Mkondiwa was appointed Chief Secretary to the Government on 27th August, 2014 by the President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, becoming the 11th head of the Public Service of Malawi since the country’s Independence. He has more than 35 years experience in the Malawi Public Service, rising from the rank of Administrative Officer to the rank of Principal Secretary in 17 years. Prior to his appointment as Chief Secretary to the Government, Mr. Mkondiwa worked as Principal Secretary in various Ministries for 17 years. He was the Secretary for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation when he was appointed to head the Malawi Public Service.
Mr. George Mkondiwa has a Master of Arts Degree in Development Studies obtained at the Institute of Social Studies in Netherlands and a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration obtained from the University of Malawi. He attended Carleton and Ottawa Universities in Canada, specializing in Public Administration and Management under a Pearson Fellowship awarded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada. He possesses several certificates in various management fields.
Mr. George Mkondiwa has vast experience in public sector reforms, project management as well as financial management. Before his promotion to the rank of Principal Secretary, he worked mostly as head of administration and finance in various government ministries. He, therefore, has practical experience in analysis of issues and coming up with rational decisions.
Mr. George Mkondiwa has also been a diplomat for many years, having worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and including as Ambassador for Malawi in the United States of America from 1994 to 1995.
In his spare time, Mr. George Mkondiwa likes socializing with various levels of people. He has, over the years, acquired a special interest in the conservation of the natural resources, especially the aquatic life.
As Chief Secretary to the Government, Mr. Mkondiwa is keen on ensuring that reforms in the Public Service are implemented so that the Malawi Public Service is once again professional and respected.
