Parallel session 9D: Learning from climate shocks (NAP Technical Working Group)

Moderator: Vositha Wijenayake (SLYCAN)

Synopsis: Every country is experiencing different climate shocks of varying magnitude and duration, and many are new or unusual to the current generation. These shocks are highlighting vulnerabilities in ways that traditional vulnerability assessments would not, and there is a lot to be learned from how different communities and governments are reacting and responding, just before, during and after. The evolution of these events also offer new insights in how impacts evolve and progress between systems. This session will explore how we can best learn from studying recent events.

Topics:

  • Introduction (Agnes Balota)
  • Video presentation on “Irma Diaries”, book by Angela Burnett, Virgin Islands
  • Country experiences on recent climate shocks: heat waves, hurricanes (Haiti), urban flooding (Philippines), drought, shifting seasons
  • Brainstorming on how to enhance learning from climate shocks
